Revolution in industrial book embellishment: CPI Books relies on DM-MAXLINER 3D from KURZ

Fürth/Germany, May 5, 2025: LEONHARD KURZ and CPI Books are writing a new chapter in book production together: CPI, one of Europe's largest book manufacturers, is using the DM-MAXLINER 3D from KURZ in series production. With this installation, the versatile machine is celebrating a double premiere: Not only is it being used for the first time in the United Kingdom, but it is now also being used in CPI's standard production for industrial book printing. This underlines both partners' shared commitment to redefining the boundaries of book embellishment and to further advancing the market with innovative solutions.

Book embellishment at a new level

CPI Books is known for its innovative spirit and high standards of production quality and efficiency. After intensive preparation, the DM-MAXLINER 3D was integrated into the company's ongoing multi-shift production. “We have thoroughly explored the market and looked very closely at all the alternatives,” explains Jamie Stanborough, Operations Director at CPI Books. “The DM-MAXLINER 3D stands out in terms of quality, productivity and robustness. It quickly became clear to us that no other solution meets our high book embellishment standards as well as this one. An additional advantage for us is that KURZ not only supplies the machine but also manufactures the transfer carriers for embellishment. This gives us a perfectly coordinated complete solution that optimally integrates all process steps, from the machine to the embellishment material.”

Successful commissioning is also an important milestone for KURZ. Michael Aumann, Global Director of Digital Embellishment Solutions at KURZ, emphasizes: “We are very pleased that our long-standing partner CPI Books is the first book production facility in the UK to use the DM-MAXLINER 3D in regular operation. The close, constructive collaboration has been crucial in tailoring the technology precisely to the specific requirements of book production.”

Productivity that makes a difference

The DM-MAXLINER 3D enables digital metallization, plus UV spot and relief varnishes to be applied with impressive precision in a single pass. This shortens processes and significantly increases productivity. The groundbreaking 3D inkjet technology from KURZ subsidiary Steinemann DPE enables precise and high-gloss metallization as well as 3D varnishing that is visually and haptically convincing. Thanks to its ability to cost-effectively implement high-quality industrial embellishment, the DM-MAXLINER 3D is ideal for high-quality book covers and creative special editions. “For us, the impressive detail quality and excellent register accuracy delivered by the DM-MAXLINER 3D were crucial – both essential for the high standards of our book production,” explains Jamie Stanborough.

20 years of joint innovation

For over two decades, CPI Books and KURZ have been working together in a spirit of partnership and a shared understanding of innovation. The introduction of the DM-MAXLINER 3D represents another milestone in this successful partnership. “CPI is known for its consistent openness to new technologies and regularly provides feedback that also motivates us as a partner,” emphasizes Michael Aumann. “We are convinced that the DM-MAXLINER 3D will make a significant contribution to even more efficient and higher-quality book production at CPI in the future.”
