The proliferation of color copiers, personal computers and desktop publishing systems has made it easy for some individuals and organizations to now make convincing counterfeit holograms. This places government documents under risk, creating a major concern for federal and state authorities.

Many countries confronted with this security threat have incorporated an Optically Variable Device on their visas, passports and travel documents to validate authenticity. In most instances, the technology of choice has been the KINEGRAM®, which is virtually impossible to counterfeit.

When the KURZ OVD, known by its trade name, KINEGRAM®, is combined with other features such as laser engraving, tamper-evident substrates and, if desired, secure optical codes, the resulting document is highly resistant to alteration or counterfeiting.

The recently adopted permanent resident card of Canada (as shown above) is an excellent example of the effective combination of security features and is one of the most secure documents currently in use.
